Turnitin LTI 1.3 in Canvas: Supporting Student Writing in the Age of AI
How can Turnitin support stronger student writing—not just catch plagiarism? In this hands-on session, middle and high school teachers will explore how the Turnitin LTI 1.3 integration in Canvas can support the writing process, provide meaningful feedback, and promote academic integrity in the age of artificial intelligence.
Participants will experience Turnitin from both the student and teacher perspective through guided practice and live demonstrations. Teachers will learn how to create Turnitin-enabled assignments in Canvas, interpret similarity and AI writing reports, and explore feedback tools that support revision and growth.
The session will also introduce a process-over-product approach to writing pedagogy, emphasizing drafting, feedback, revision, and critical thinking in an era where generative AI is reshaping how students write and learn.
In this session, participants will:
  • Learn how to set up and use Turnitin LTI 1.3 assignments in Canvas
  • Experience Turnitin as both a student and teacher
  • Explore similarity reports, feedback features, and AI writing detection tools
  • Discuss best practices for supporting authentic student writing
  • Consider instructional shifts that emphasize the writing process over the final product in the age of AI
This session is ideal for middle school and high school teachers interested in strengthening writing instruction while thoughtfully navigating the opportunities and challenges of generative AI.
